A signal blocker in humans can be anything that mutes a discomfort before it can do its proper job. Maybe you feel sick, so you take medicine to get through the day. You’re blocking the signal that your body needs rest. Get the idea? Once you start looking for them, they’re everywhere. And they can be more impactful than you might think.
Take potty training. A toddler wakes up wet, and the sensation is supposed to teach them something. But overnight pull-ups work so well, and are so convenient in avoiding a mess, that they block the discomfort signal. The problem gets solved and the lesson is slower to arrive.
A few years later, the same kid is bored in the back seat, and boredom is a signal too. It’s what used to push a kid toward daydreaming, noticing the world outside the window, or asking a question. Hand them an iPad instead, and the signal gets blocked. Now we have teenagers who can’t sit through a minute of downtime without reaching for their phones.
There’s a real and growing movement of parents now trying to raise kids who don’t follow this pattern. Most of that conversation gets framed around screens and specifically screens in school. I think that framing is too narrow. The actual target is comfort itself, and how completely we’ve engineered it into everything. Yes, screens are one small piece of it. So is whether you can wait a week for a package to arrive instead of getting it tomorrow, or wait for an episode to drop next week instead of watching the whole season tonight. Our world has spent two decades optimizing away the gap between wanting something and having it.
AI is the newest device on that spectrum.
It’s different than the gap closed by a search engine. Looking something up online has always closed the gap between not knowing and knowing — you didn’t know a fact, now you do. And you didn’t have to go to the library and use a card catalog. That’s not what’s new here.
What AI blocks is the effort in between. The discomfort of working through a problem, the moments of failure, the applying of an idea. A search engine hands you a fact. AI can hand you the finished product. That’s a different signal being blocked, and a much bigger one.
That gap is where the work happens. A kid staring at a math problem they can’t yet solve looks, from the outside, exactly like a kid wasting time. But something is happening in that stretch of confusion that a fast answer skips entirely. It’s the mind testing an idea, failing, adjusting, and testing again. Confusion is a signal, telling a learner precisely where understanding runs out. It’s uncomfortable enough that the instinct is to make it stop. We used to quit, ask someone for help, or dig deeper. Now we can ask for the work to be done for us. But the struggle is the actual product, and the confusion is just the signal that the product is being made properly.
AI can block that signal more completely than anything before it. Ask it something you don’t understand, and the answer arrives instantly, in fluent, confident sentences, before you’ve sat in the not-knowing long enough for it to teach you anything.
But AI isn’t corrupting learning. It’s running the exact same interference parents ran when they handed a whiny kid an iPad. And I think no one paid attention to the potential end results, for way too long.
Now, nobody wants a toddler in wet pants indefinitely, and nobody’s arguing kids should sit bored in silence all the time. The real question was never “is discomfort good?” It’s whether a specific discomfort is doing a specific job, and whether or not we know what that job is before we provide an easy solution.
That’s the question worth asking about generative AI, and how it’s being used in schools. We’re going to have to teach kids to be uncomfortable.
