What children are teaching us about play, safety, and learning

I watched a teenager last week hunched over her phone sitting on a bench outside Target, typing intently. When I got closer, I peeked over her shoulder and saw she wasn’t texting friends or scrolling social media – she was deep in conversation with an AI chatbot. She was completely absorbed, completely engaged, completely focused. We don’t normally see that kind of energy in a classroom, and she wasn’t being a consumer swiping through Reels. She was an active participant in an evolving conversation.
It got me thinking as I continued my walk to my car: What are kids actually seeking when they retreat into these digital spaces?
The Shrinking World of Child-Controlled Play
Over the past few decades, we’ve watched children’s autonomous play spaces shrink dramatically. The neighborhood adventures of the past gave way to supervised backyards and alleyways, then to bedrooms filled with structured activities, and now to screens that fit in their pockets. Each retreat represents the same fundamental search: for spaces where they can exercise authentic agency and find genuine connection without adult interference.
I came across a quote recently that stood out: children have retreated to video games because “it’s the one place adults can’t interfere, control, or critique.” Think about that for a moment. Our students are desperately seeking spaces beyond our well-intentioned oversight – places where they can experiment, fail, discover, and be authentically themselves without judgment.
Now they’re finding something even more compelling: AI companions that offer unconditional positive regard, infinite patience, and responses free from the adult agenda that permeates so much of their daily experience.
Whose Definition of “Safe”?
Here’s where it gets complicated: when we talk about creating “safe” learning environments, we might mean something entirely different from what our students are seeking. For us as educators, safe often means predictable, managed, risk-free. We think about physical safety, emotional comfort, and clear boundaries.
But for children, safe might mean autonomous, judgment-free, authentic. They’re seeking safety from adult oversight, not just the safety we think we’re providing. When a student chooses an AI conversation over a classroom discussion, they’re not rejecting human connection – they’re choosing a space where they can explore ideas without an expectation of assessment, fear of correction, or the weight of adult expectations.
This distinction helps explain why AI feels safer to many kids than human relationships. It’s not just that AI is non-judgmental – it’s that AI doesn’t have an agenda about what the child should be doing, learning, or becoming.
Kids as Problem-Solvers
Rather than viewing this digital retreat as avoidance or addiction, what if we recognized it as sophisticated problem-solving? Our students are actively addressing what feels missing in their educational relationships. They’re teaching us something profound through their choices.
When a child spends hours building elaborate worlds in Minecraft, they’re not wasting time. They’re exercising creative agency in ways that feel impossible in structured learning environments. When they develop relationships with AI characters, they’re not avoiding human connection – they’re seeking the kind of unconditional acceptance that allows for genuine self-expression.
These aren’t problems to be solved. They’re solutions our students have already found.
What This Means for Us as Educators
The mirror that AI holds up to our educational relationships can be uncomfortable. Children’s comfort with AI companions reveals what might be missing in their human learning experiences: patience without limits, responses without judgment, space for authentic exploration without the pressure of being “right.”
This doesn’t mean we need to compete with AI or eliminate these digital refuges. Instead, we can learn from what children are telling us through their choices.
As educators, we can begin to ask different questions:
- Where do my students feel truly safe to be themselves?
- When do I see them light up with interest in something?
- How can I become more of a co-conspirator in learning rather than a controller of it?
The Opportunity
Children’s digital choices aren’t feedback about their deficits – they’re feedback about our opportunities. Every time a student chooses a screen over a human conversation, they’re showing us something valuable about what authentic learning feels like to them. No, we can’t compete with dopamine. But we can learn from these moments.
The pedagogies many of us have engaged with throughout our careers – project-based learning, game-based learning, inquiry-based learning – all share something in common with what children find in their digital refuges: they honor student agency and create space for authentic exploration. The difference is often in how we implement them.
What would happen if we approached our teaching with the same non-judgmental curiosity that AI offers? If we created learning experiences that felt as safe and engaging as the digital spaces our students retreat to?
This isn’t about abandoning structure or standards. It’s about recognizing that the deepest learning happens when students feel safe enough to take risks, make mistakes, and be genuinely themselves in the process. As educators, we have the chance to bridge these worlds – creating learning environments that honor the agency and safety our students seek while still providing the rich, meaningful experiences they need to grow.
Celebrate times when learning feels like play, when curiosity drives the conversation, when you are a co-conspirator rather than a controller. Help others see that the digital refuges our students create don’t have to be the enemy of authentic education. We can learn from these moments as they show us what’s possible with kids.
After all, if an AI can make a child feel safe enough to create elaborate stories about imaginary characters, imagine what we might accomplish when we create that same sense of safety in our learning communities.
